About Donaldsonville
Donaldsonville is the seat of Ascension Parish, on the west bank of the Mississippi River near Bayou Lafourche. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area and had 6,695 residents at the 2020 census.
Its historic district has been described as the finest collection of buildings from the antebellum era to 1933 of any Louisiana river town above New Orleans.
A Short History of Donaldsonville
The city served as the state capital from 1829 to 1831. During the Civil War, Fort Butler was successfully defended on June 28, 1863, in one of the first battles where free Black men and fugitive slaves fought as Union soldiers. In 1868, residents elected Pierre Caliste Landry, an attorney and Methodist minister, as mayor. He was the first African American elected mayor in the United States.
